How to Confirm BSNL Broadband Plan Change

Every day, I see a lot of queries like “ how to confirm that my plan is changed ? “ , status show “ open “ etc. Let me help you go through a few steps using which you can confirm that the plan is changed or not.

First and easy method,

Go to http://data.bsnl.in/wps/portal, log in using your 14 digit alpha numeric portal ID and check post paid orders. Enter the phone no in the prescribed format and hit enter. You need to enter only your phone no. . Please note that you should not use zero. Normally you will get a table with your current plan and plan applied. On plan applied, see the effective date and status. Effective date should be in past and status should be provisioned.

There are other methods using which we can confirm the plan change. Please note that the following are just trick and the one in the portal will be final. There are many options for a plan change. Let us go through

Unlimited Plan to Unlimited plan

Go to http://speedtest.net/ and perform a speed test. Compare the speed of your plan with applied plan. If there is a speed difference, you plan is approved.

Unlimited plan to Limited plan

Check the usage details. If you are still on the limited plan, chargeable units excluding night unlimited will be zero.

Limited plan to Night unlimited plan

Check the night unlimited usage. If it is zero between 2 –8 am, then your plan is night unlimited.

How to Auto Redial when the connection fails

Most of us automate the downloads. We set download and leave the system unattended, may it be during night unlimited or during day time, it is a head ache if the connection fails in between. You have to manually reconnect to resume the download. We can automate the process by a few simple adjustments in the dialler. A dialler is the window where we click connect.

Procedure:
Control panel > Network connections > Choose you dialler > properties > Options tab > check the box " Redial if line is dropped "

There is not need for a batch file or any other utility. When the system fails, it will try to reconnect the no of times mentioned. Also it is wise to set the reconnection time to 1 minute or higher to make sure that line problems do not affect your connection.

How to change your BSNL Portal ID

BSNL gives two IDs, one is the user name that we enter in the modem if in PPPoE or in dialler in case of Bridge mode. Another is the Portal ID which we need to log in to the BSNL portals http://data.bsnl.in/wps/portal and http://bbservice.bsnl.in/ to check usage or change password.

http://data.bsnl.in/wps/portal is modified on 11 th of this month adding a new feature to change your Portal ID. Portal ID is a 14 digit code of the form ABC123mmddyyyy.

ABC represents your surname

123 – A 3 digit code

mmddyyyy – Date of application normally like 25102008

To change, log in to http://data.bsnl.in/wps/portal using the Portal ID and password,

On the welcome page, on the left side, you will find an option to Change user ID, single click it. You will be directed to a page where you can enter the desired Portal ID and click “ submit “.

Similarly you can change the portal password and the service password from the same screen.

Hope you will find some use to it as the portal ID is usually very hard to remember with all those numbers.

How to repair – Limited or No Connectivity

Are you experiencing an error message " Limited or No connectivity "

Once you see this message, there are 2 possibilities

1. You can connect to Internet

2. You cannot connect to Internet

Both ways go for the following steps to solve the problem.

Start > Control Panel, look for " Network Connections " and Double click it.

You will be able to see Local Area Connection (It is possible that there is more than one icon, in that case choose the one with Limited or no connectivity )

Right click & Select “ properties “

Select Internet Protocol [TCP/ IP] & click " Properties "

Choose " Use the the following IP address " and " Use the following DNS server addresses " and insert the values as

IP Address : 192.168.1.2 (If you wish a static IP, use 192.168.1.25)

Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0

Default gateway : 192.168.1.1

Preferred DNS server : 208.67.222.222

Alternate DNS server : 208.67.220.220

Click OK.

Click OK in the Local Area Connection Properties

Now you will find the error message has vanished.

If not please restart you system and modem to find the connection to be ok.

Please note that the values are added keeping mind BSNL server. The procedure is same for all ISP. If yours is not a BSNL connection, take down the current values and then try. You can always revert to original values by repeating the procedure with same values .

It has a stop watch that can show almost every details. You can reset it any time to monitor the usage.

If your plan has download/upload limit (say 1 GB), this is your best choice. Bitmeter will alert you once you have almost consumed your bandwidth. These settings are customizable.

It can alert you if your download goes beyond a certain speed

or if you have downloaded a particular amount.

BSNL offers one rent free WLL connection to its Land Line customers.

Oh. It is a good news. The world is going mobile. We cannot live without a mobile phone these days. It seems BSNL too has noticed this. It has come with an attractive offer. You will get a free WLL (Wireless in Local Loop) mobile free. If I am not wrong, it uses the CDMA technology whose voice quality is superior to GSM.

The best part it is rent free. If you own a landline and pays proper rent for it, you get one free of rent. But your average monthly bill should be Rs. 500 otherwise you are not eligible.

Don’t fancy a WLL mobile ? you can choose and additional rent free landline instead. The whole point is to retain the customers which it is loosing very badly to private players.

Got myself one of those. It is ok. It is a basic phone with normal features. Try grabbing one, after all you need not pay for that.

Precautions during BSNL Broadband Plan Change

BSNL plan change is a bit tricky with hidden charges. BSNL like giving surprises. Let me list a few when you apply for a plan change.

1. For plan change, you need to apply in the previous month.

2. It does not mean that plan change will happen on 1st of next month.

3. When you change to a higher plan, you should pay one month's rent as advance.

4. Double, triple confirm the plan change before you start using it. Do not believe BSNL customer care or portal. Both may lie.

5. If your plan is not changed from first of a particular month, then you have to pay for both plans for the days you used them.

In detail,

1. In April, you want to change your plan and you start using unlimited as you expect to change your plan. This is not possible as the plan change cannot take effect unless you apply in March. Any plan change should wait for 1st of next month to pass.

2. After you applied for plan change in April, you expect to get the new plan on May 1st. Beware! it may not happen. You give your application in administrative section. They need to pass it to the technical section. Technical section approves it and pass it to Bangalore NIB where the plan change takes effect.

We consider all these departments as BSNL. But for them, these are like Pakistan, China and Srilanka. Your plan change will not be effective from the date of your application or from first of next month. The effective date is when the technical section sanctions it. They set an effective date. Which we can check under BSNL Portal under my orders.

3. If you change to Unlimited 750, you need to pay Rs. 1500 next month. RS. 750 as advance and Rs. 750 as rent.

4. According to what they say if you see the word PROVISIONED in my orders you can consider your plan change to be effective from the date beside it. Please do not start using even if you see provisioned. Check the speed and confirm you have a plan change. If you have changed to Unlimited plan, then chargeable units should show zero.

Do not confirm with Customer care or local exchange. Senior Divisional Engineer (SDE) will be the right person to answer your queries. Ask for his number when you speak to local exchange or customer care.

5. If your plan change is from 10th, your previously had Home - 250 and you changed to Unlimited 750. Then till 10th you should pay the charge as per Home 250. If you have exceeded 333 MB (1/3 of 1 GB) then you will have to pay for the extra usage, even if you shifted to an unlimited plan. And for the next 20 days you should pay (750/30 ) X 20 = 500.

All these happened to me when I changed from Home 250 to Unlimited 750. Just wanted to share that others need not suffer these surprises. But BSNL may have more in stock for you. Please share this with your friends who intend a plan change.

If your IP address start with 59.xxx.xxx.xxx, read on. There are a few tools which 117.xxx.xxx.xxx users can also use.

Unless you use an unlimited plan, your bill will be based on your usage data as recorded by BSNL. If we use more than the allowed limit, we need to pay extra for this usage. Even if we are careful, some virus infection in our system can increase the chargeable units to a dangerous extent. It can happen even if you have a very good antivirus. Therefore it is important to monitor the usage closely. Unfortunately BSNL fails to provide useful information to its users. Many of us rely on a single BSNL site we managed to identify for monitoring the usage.

BSNL sites do not update on a real time basis and is neither dependable as it has a very high downtime due to maintenance and billing activities. From 1st to 5 th of every month, BSNL sites are totally unreliable as they are used for billing purposes than updating user details. If you are a new user, your usage details may not appear for about 2 weeks. From my personal experience, I can tell you that BSNL may update the usage on 1st of month on 20 th. I ended up with a huge bill after they did this to me.

Another common error is that many believe usage means only download. BSNL calculates your usage as download + upload. If we use internet just for browsing, it will cost around 15 MB per hour in your usage stats. It is impossible to manually calculate the usage. Please use the following links.

Do not use a cyber café for net banking. Most of them are safe heavens for spywares. Avoid using any system which you feel unsafe. If you are forced to use an unsafe network, change the password at the earliest.

8. They will never ask your password

Your password is your personal property. Your bank will never ask your password. If you receive any emails or phone calls asking your password, they are fake. You need not share your password with call center executive of your bank.

9. Change Password

A hacker may not use your password immediately. Change your password at regular intervals. Choose a difficult to guess password. Password, name123456, child’s name, lover’s name etc can be taken as bad examples. Remember, don’t forget your password.

10. A second PC

Wait. You need not buy another computer. The trick is to install a second operating system in your computer. Microsoft Windows is the most commonly used operating system. You can install more than one Windows in your computer. Use the first one for regular internet requirements and second one only for net banking.

A better option is to use Linux as second operating system. Most spyware cannot work in Linux. While using Knoppix ( a type of Linux), you need not install it in your computer. Insert the Knoppix CD and restart the system. Then you will find an option to choose either Knoppix or Windows. Opt Knoppix, it is similar to Windows. Use its internet explorer as you do in Windows. Since it use your CD drive, no information is stored in your computer.

In simple words, Current economic crisis is due to utterly foolish financial strategies of US banks and Funds. There was a boom in real estate business in US. The land price was soaring each day. It was highly profitable to build or buy a new home. Your investment price will be giving excellent returns in a few months. This results in increased home loans. In the beginning, banks were cautious and provided loans to potential customers. These are called prime loans. For prime loans, customer should not have a bad credit record and should be in a position to repay the debt.

Now comes the real US style. More the money, more the greed. Banks wanted to exploit this situation and earn more. They started lending loans to non potential customers. The industries depending on US orders came to a crisis. We depend heavily on Foreign Direct Investments. Financial institutions began to withdraw their money from stock markets. This resulted in a selling trend and drop in sensex. To send this money home, they need to convert it into Dollars. So they began to extensively buy dollars. This resulted reduction in value of Indian rupees. Investors panicked. They started looking for safe investments, which they found in gold. Gold prices started to soar exponentially. Gold prices are on a record value. This trend will sustain.

This is aligned to the global reduction in oil price. No money, lesser production, lesser use of Petroleum products. This had a very bad impact of Economy of middle east countries. As most of the employees were from South Asian countries and they account for a considerable amount of foreign currency. These employees and respective economies were affected. One man’s trouble is another’s opportunity. Every economist in this world now dream of finding a solution and rise to fame. Many have already made claims. The problem is, many of them is making the same mistake as the authors of recession did. They are not ready to think from a different perspective. Temporary and may be the permanent solution for recession is to increase the flow of money into the market. As this is a vicious circle, money keeps draining from economy to safe assets like Gold, Platinum etc. Those institutions (both Government and Private) should have plans for a steady monetary channel.

In simple words, recession is lack of money. To overcome, we need to find money. The most unfortunate solution will be a war by US to get a better share of oil profit. Yes, it can be Iran. It is worth notice that the India is not heavily affected from the recession. This is really a good sign as export and outsourcing are a major source of revenue. The point that economists raise is the wide spread of nationalized banks in India. These bank's policies are controlled by government and has strict reservations on investing.
